Grade math, straight from the syllabus.

The answer to “what do I need on the final” is already sitting in your syllabus. It's on page one, in the table nobody reads twice. Homework 20%. Quizzes 15%. Midterm 25%. Final 40%. Everything after that is arithmetic you learned in middle school.

So it should be easy to get. Search for it in week 14 and see what happens instead: a page that wants your email first, three autoplaying ads, one number with no working shown, and no way to tell whether it counted your dropped quiz or your curve.

The arithmetic is genuinely easy. The rules around it are not.

Your professor drops the lowest quiz. Your weights add up to 105 because the participation line was added later. Your school gives an A− a 3.7 and the school your friend goes to gives it a 3.67, which is a real difference by the time it reaches your transcript. A calculator that hides its formula can't tell you which of those it quietly ignored, and most of them ignore all four.

Eric is a software developer who builds free, single-purpose calculators — a small network of sites that all follow one rule: a number has to be defensible before it ships. He writes the methodology sections here, and he re-checks the parts that go stale, because grading scales and GPA conversions change by school and by year.

He is not a professor, an advisor, or a registrar, and this site is not affiliated with any school. That's the point of showing the formula: you shouldn't have to take his word for your grade, and with the math printed on the page, you don't have to.

How it works

Every tool here has to trace back to a document somebody published. In this subject that means one of three things: the syllabus in your hand, your school's own written policy — the registrar's grading scale, the student handbook, the catalog page — or the style manual a citation format comes from. Tool pages link to the second and third kinds directly, so you can read the rule we applied rather than trusting that we read it.

The first kind, your syllabus, we can't link to. So we don't assume it. Anything that varies by course or by school is an input you fill in, not a number baked into the code — because the single fastest way to get a grade wrong is to average four assignments a professor never said were equal.

The arithmetic itself is checked, not trusted. Each calculation ships with worked examples whose answers are pinned in an automated test, and that test runs on every deploy: if a change makes the math return a different number, the site fails to build instead of quietly publishing it. Anything that can go stale — scales, conversions, style-manual editions — carries the date it was last reviewed, right on the tool.

What this site won't tell you

Your official grade. Nothing here is your grade — it's what the numbers you typed produce under the rules you told it to use. Your instructor records the real one and your registrar keeps it, and if either of them disagrees with a result on this site, they are right and we are not.

It also won't tell you whether to drop the course, whether a 2.8 is good enough for the program you want, or what your chances are. Those are questions for someone who knows your situation. An advisor is free and already on your campus; this is a calculator.
