Why Your Gradebook Average Is Not Your Course Grade

If your course is graded by weighted components, the average your gradebook displays is mathematically wrong. Here is what the correct calculation looks like and why the two numbers diverge.

The number your gradebook shows is almost never your course grade. If your syllabus assigns different weights to exams, homework, and participation, your course grade is a weighted average — and a weighted average is not the same arithmetic as a plain average of percentages. The gap between the two can be several letter-grade points.

What a weighted grade actually is

A weighted grade sums each component's percentage score multiplied by that component's weight. The formula is:

Course grade = Σ (component score × component weight)

All weights must add to 1.0 (or 100%). If your syllabus says exams are 50%, homework 30%, and participation 20%, those three weights sum to 100% and your grade is:

(exam score × 0.50) + (homework score × 0.30) + (participation score × 0.20)

A plain average of three percentages divides their sum by three — which implicitly weights each component at 33.3%. That is only correct when all components carry equal weight. Most syllabi do not weight them equally.

A fully worked example

Suppose your scores are:

  • Exams: 74% (weight: 50%)
  • Homework: 95% (weight: 30%)
  • Participation: 88% (weight: 20%)

Plain average: (74 + 95 + 88) ÷ 3 = 85.7%

Weighted course grade: (74 × 0.50) + (95 × 0.30) + (88 × 0.20) = 37.0 + 28.5 + 17.6 = 83.1%

The gradebook's plain average reads 85.7%. The grade your instructor actually calculates is 83.1%. That is a 2.6-point gap — enough to cross a letter-grade boundary on many scales. Whether 83.1% is a B or a B− depends on your institution's published cut-offs, and those differ more than most students expect. Columbia's School of Professional Studies puts B− at 80 and B at 83, so 83.1% clears a B by a tenth of a point. The University of British Columbia starts B− at 68 and A− at 80, so the identical score is an A− there. The arithmetic here is universal; the letter it earns is not.

Why the gradebook shows the wrong number

Learning management systems like Canvas and Blackboard display a running percentage. When not all assignments have been graded yet, many systems calculate the current percentage only over the graded portion — meaning the weights of ungraded components are temporarily redistributed. The display shifts as new grades come in. The number you see mid-semester is not a projection of your final grade; it is a ratio of points earned to points possible so far, under a weighting scheme that changes with every new entry.

Some systems let instructors configure weighted grading explicitly, and when that is set up correctly the gradebook percentage will match the weighted formula. Many instructors do not configure it, or configure it inconsistently with the syllabus. The only way to know which situation applies to you is to compare your gradebook's displayed percentage against the weighted calculation by hand.

The specific ways the estimate goes wrong

Unequal component sizes treated as equal

If you have ten homework grades averaging 92% and two exam grades averaging 71%, a plain average of all twelve scores weights each assignment at 1/12. If the syllabus says exams count for 60% of the grade, those two exams should contribute 60 points to the weighted total — not 2/12 of the plain average. Treating them equally understates the damage a weak exam does.

Missing grades counted as zero or excluded

A missing assignment recorded as zero pulls the plain average down sharply. A missing assignment excluded from the calculation inflates the running percentage. Neither is the same as what happens when the instructor applies the syllabus weight to a zero — which may itself differ from what happens when the instructor drops the lowest score. Each of these is a different number.

Extra credit added inconsistently

Extra credit added directly to a percentage score before weighting is not the same as extra credit added to the weighted total after all components are computed. The syllabus should specify which applies; if it does not, ask the instructor before the semester ends.

Rounding at the wrong stage

Rounding each component score before multiplying by its weight introduces a different error than rounding the final weighted sum. Over several components, the accumulated rounding difference can be a fraction of a point — small, but occasionally enough to matter at a boundary.

Pull out your syllabus, find the weight for each graded component, and apply the formula above. Frequently asked questions

Does my gradebook percentage update correctly as the semester goes on?

It depends on how the instructor configured the system. Many gradebooks redistribute the weights of ungraded components across graded ones, so the displayed percentage changes with every new entry and does not represent a stable projection of your final grade. The only reliable check is to apply the syllabus weights yourself to the scores you have in hand.

What if my syllabus lists points instead of percentages?

A points-based course is different from a weighted-component course. If every assignment draws from a single shared pool of points, your grade is total points earned divided by total points possible — no component weighting involved. The confusion described in this guide applies specifically to courses where the syllabus assigns a percentage weight to each category, such as "exams count for 50%." If your course uses a flat points pool, the gradebook percentage is more likely to be accurate.

Can two students with the same scores in every category end up with different course grades?

No — if the syllabus weights and scores are identical, the weighted calculation produces the same number. Differences arise when students have different scores, different numbers of missing assignments, or when an instructor applies a curve or drops the lowest score, which the base weighted formula does not include.

My weighted grade and my gradebook percentage are close but not identical. Which is right?

Apply the formula from your syllabus by hand. If the result matches neither number exactly, check whether the gradebook is excluding any ungraded items, whether any extra credit has been applied, and whether the instructor's weight configuration matches the syllabus. If the discrepancy persists, the instructor is the authoritative source — the gradebook is a display tool, not the grade of record.

Does this affect my GPA calculation?

Your GPA is computed from the final letter grade or grade points your institution records, not from the percentage your gradebook displays during the semester. A gradebook percentage that is off by two or three points does not directly change your GPA — but it can change which letter grade your instructor submits, and that letter is what your institution converts to grade points.
