How Weighted Grades Work — and the Averaging Choice Nobody States

Multiplying each score by its weight is the easy half. The half nobody states is how the marks inside one component get averaged — and the two defensible answers can differ by six points.

A weighted course grade is one multiplication repeated. Each component contributes its score times its share of the course, and the contributions add up:

grade = Σ (component score × component weight) ÷ 100

Homework at 85% on a 20% weight contributes 17 points. A midterm at 84% on a 25% weight contributes 21. Add every line and you have the grade. That part is not where anything goes wrong, and it is not what this page is about.

What goes wrong is one step earlier. Before you can multiply, each component needs to be one number— and a row that says “Homework 20%” usually holds four or five separate marks. Turning those into a single percentage has two defensible answers, they disagree, and essentially no syllabus says which one it means.

The two averages inside one component

Suppose your homework row holds two marks: 7 out of 10 and 44 out of 50. There are two honest ways to average them.

Same two marks, six percentage points apart. Nothing on the page tells you which one your instructor used, and both numbers look entirely reasonable on their own.

The difference has a plain meaning. Under the total-points rule, the 50-mark assignment counts five times as much as the 10-mark one, so a big assignment done well pulls the component up. Under the mean rule, every assignment is one vote regardless of size, so a bad short quiz costs exactly as much as a bad long one. Neither is a mistake — they are two different statements about what homework is for.

What that costs at the course level

Six points inside one 20%-weight component is not six points on your grade, but it is not nothing either. Take the whole course:

That is 85.2%. Switch the homework row to the mean rule and only that one line changes — 85 becomes 79, its contribution drops from 17.00 to 15.80 — and the course lands at 84.0%. Just over a point, from a choice nobody made out loud. On a syllabus where the B+ starts at 87 and the B at 83, that is the whole distance between two grades in the wrong course.

This is why the weighted grade calculator makes the rule a labelled switch rather than a hidden default, and prints what the other rule would have said whenever the two disagree. The point is not that one is right. The point is that you should be able to see the size of the assumption you are relying on.

How to find out which rule your course uses

Three places to look, in order.

  • The syllabus wording.“Your quiz average” describes the mean of the quizzes. “Quizzes are worth 150 points total” describes total points. The phrasing is usually the only statement of the rule that exists.
  • The gradebook's own behaviour. Canvas and Blackboard compute weighted categories by total points within the category by default, so unless your instructor changed something, marks out of different totals are already being treated unequally.
  • Ask.This is a normal question, not a favour. Penn State's Senate Policy 47-20 requires the basis for grades to be given to students in writing on or before the first class meeting; the University of Toronto goes further and names weights specifically — evaluation methods and their relative weights have to be disclosed, and once known cannot be changed without the consent of a simple majority of the class. Neither governs your course unless you attend those schools, but together they establish that a written, stable, answerable weighting scheme is the ordinary expectation.

Two things this page assumes you have already sorted out

That your syllabus weights, not points. If the top of your syllabus lists point values and a course total — 400 points for the final, 1000 for the course — it is a different system with different behaviour, and multiplying by weights will give you a number that is not your grade. Which kind of syllabus you have is worth two minutes before you type anything.

That you know what your grade so far is averaging over. A weighted grade computed from graded work only is a real number and a useful one, but it is not your course grade and it will move on its own as work comes back. That gap has its own page: what your gradebook's running total is actually telling you.

Where the arithmetic stops

At the number. This site does not turn 85.2% into a letter, because the percentage at which an A− begins is a decision your institution made and published, not a fact about arithmetic — it is 90 in one course and 92 in the next, and plenty of schools have no minus grades at all. Read your cut-offs off your own syllabus.

And if your weights do not add up to 100, do not scale them to fit. A total of 105 or 95 is usually a real signal — a component you forgot, a duplicated row, or a line added after the syllabus was written — and every one of those changes the answer.
