Points or Percentages: Which Syllabus Do You Have?

Two grading systems, two different promises about whether a good unit can pay for a bad one. How to tell which your course runs on, and the two percentages a points course quietly produces.

Before any grade calculation means anything, you have to know which of two systems your course runs on. They are not variations on a theme. They make different promises about what your work can and cannot make up for, and running your numbers through the wrong one produces an answer that looks completely normal and is simply not your grade.

Which one you have takes ten seconds to check

Look at the grading section at the top of your syllabus, not at your gradebook.

The gradebook cannot settle this for you, which is the part that catches people out. Canvas and Blackboard host both kinds of course in the same interface, and both will show you a percentage. The syllabus is the document that says which system produced it.

The difference is about what can be made up

Here is what actually changes, and it is worth more than the arithmetic. UC Berkeley's teaching centre puts the distinction in terms of what each system assumes about learning: under an accumulated-points system, points are in a sense, transferable between units — a student who does badly on one unit can compensate by earning points elsewhere. Under fixed percentages, they largely cannot.

Concretely: in a weighted course where the final is 40%, no amount of homework can buy back a bad final, because homework's ceiling is its 20% and that ceiling does not move. In a points course, a 400-point final is large but it is still just points, and points earned anywhere count the same. A strong project genuinely does pay for a weak midterm.

So the same student, doing the same work, is in a different strategic position under each system. That is the reason to know which one you are in, and it is a reason that has nothing to do with a calculator.

A points course produces two percentages, and both are true

This is the part that causes the most confusion mid-term. Take a 1000-point course in week eight:

You have earned 387 points. Now divide, twice:

  • 387 ÷ 450 — over the work that has been marked — is 86.0%. This is what a student means by “my grade right now”.
  • 387 ÷ 1000 — over the whole course — is 38.7%. This is not a bad grade. It is not a grade at all. It is the statement “most of this course has not happened yet”, wearing a percent sign.

Both divisions are correct and they answer different questions, which is why the points calculator prints both and labels which is which rather than choosing for you.

Blank is not zero — and your gradebook knows it

The 38.7% figure is only reachable if you treat the ungraded project and final as zeros. Canvas, by default, does the opposite: it leaves ungraded work out of the total entirely. The University of Wisconsin–Green Bay's teaching centre documents the behaviour bluntly — Canvas ignores all ungraded assignments when calculating a student's total grade, even those that are past due — and notes that instructors often have to go back and enter zeros deliberately for a missing assignment to count against anyone.

The practical consequence runs in both directions. A blank sitting in your gradebook for work you never handed in is inflating what you see, and it will drop when someone enters the zero. A blank for work that simply has not been marked yet is not costing you anything. They look identical on screen. Only you know which is which, which is why no calculation should quietly turn one into the other.

Where a points course is easier: targets are just subtraction

Weighted courses make you reason in percentages of percentages. A points course lets you count in the same unit throughout, which makes the useful question — what do I need from here — a single subtraction.

Finishing the course above at 90% means finishing at 900 points. You have 387. So the 550 points still in play have to bring in 513 of them, which is a 93.3% average on everything that is left. A flat A at 93% means 930 points, so 543 of the 550 remaining — a 98.7% average, technically alive and realistically a different conversation.

And a 100% finish would need 613 points when only 550 exist. That is not an error message; it is a fact worth knowing in week eight rather than week fifteen, and it is why nothing here is capped or clamped.

Where this stops

Which system your course uses is your instructor's choice, and your syllabus is the only authority on it — no tool can infer it from a screenshot, and this one does not try. Some courses genuinely run a hybrid, with weighted categories filled by point totals; if yours does, how the marks inside a weighted component get averaged is the question to settle first.

And the letter is not ours to assign. Point ranges for letters are published institutionally — Hostos Community College's point grading scale is one worked public example — but there is no universal table, so read your cut-offs off your own syllabus and use those.
